Men's Basketball Michael Reedy
ROCHESTER, Mich. – The Oakland University men's basketball team has officially announced its schedule ahead of the 2024-25 season.
Under the guidance of head coach Greg Kampe, the longest-tenured head coach at one school in Division I, will lead the Golden Grizzlies for his 41st season. Kampe, who currently sits at 699 wins, ranks in the top-10 for most wins by active Division I head coaches. Kampe and the Golden Grizzlies return to the court after its historic 2023-24 season, as it won both the Horizon League Regular Season and the Horizon League Tournament title to earn a bid into the NCAA Tournament. Oakland also recorded its first NCAA Round of 64 win as the No. 14-seed Golden Grizzlies took down the No. 3-seed Kentucky Wildcats, 80-76, behind Jack Gohlke's 10 three pointers and Trey Townsend's double-double.
Preseason Showdown
The Golden Grizzlies will tip off its season with an exhibition game against the University of Michigan Oct. 20 at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit. The exhibition game, which will benefit Forgotten Harvest, will be University of Michigan's head coach Dusty May's first game as the head coach of the Wolverines as the matchup marks the 10th meeting between the two teams.
The Golden Grizzlies close out its preseason as it'll stay in Rochester, Mich., to face off against Rochester Christian to close out its pair of exhibition games.
Non-Conference Battles
Oakland will officially open the season at home Nov. 4 against Defiance College at the OU Credit Union O'rena. The quest for win number 700 for coach Kampe starts against the college that resides where he was born.
The non-conference slate is packed with challenging road games, including trips to Boise State Nov. 6, a rematch from last year's tight game against the University of Illinois Nov. 13, and a marquee matchup against Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse Nov. 16.
The Golden Grizzlies will also face off against regional rivals, as it's set to host Eastern Michigan on November 21 and will travel to Toledo on November 30. A neutral-site clash against Michigan State at Little Caesars Arena on December 17 highlights the schedule before the team heads to Hawaii to compete in the prestigious Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic from December 22-25.
Oakland's non-conference schedule concludes against the University of Arkansas Dec. 30 at Bud Walton Arena as the Golden Grizzlies take on the Razorbacks, now coached by former Kentucky head coach John Calipari, the head coach of the 2023-24 Wildcats team Oakland took down in the NCAA Tournament.
Horizon League Play
The defending Horizon League regular season and tournament champs will look to defend its title as the Golden Grizzlies finished 15-5 in league play to earn the conference's overall one seed. Oakland made its way through Purdue Fort Wayne, Cleveland State and Milwaukee en route to its first ever Horizon League Tournament title.
The title defense begins Dec. 5 when Oakland hosts Wright State at the OU Credit Union O'rena. The team faces both Youngstown State and Cleveland State Dec. 7 and 19, respectively, before non-conference play resumes. After its meeting with Arkansas Dec. 30, the Golden Grizzlies ring in the new year against Milwaukee for a rematch of the 2024 Horizon League Championship game as conference play comes full swing.
The team's longest home stint comes at the tail end of January into February, as Green Bay, Northern Kentucky and Youngstown State visit the Blacktop Jan. 30, Feb. 1 and Feb. 6, respectively. On the contrary, the Golden Grizzlies spend no more than two games in-a-row on the road this season as its season is set to conclude in Wisconsin, with a meeting at Milwaukee Feb. 27, followed by the season closer at Green Bay, March 1.
